Migrating from SVN to Git, preserving branches and tags
We actually experienced this first hand here at Atlassian when our development team migrated to Git. This makes the initial clone of the repository slower, but subsequent operations such as commit, blame, diff, merge, and log dramatically faster. That's what I call a misleading answer. Other developers may access your local branches, but in order to do so, they would need to be able to access your git repository. This post should help you get up and running with git-svn in no time. There is a more concise representation of changes available: git status svn status This will show the concise changes summary as well as list any files that you haven't either ignored or told Git about. This easily allows you to commit some changes, but not others, but even more importantly, it begins to show you how git tracks changes differently.

Rest assured that subsequent fetches will be dramatically faster, mere seconds usually. Now you just fetch the remaining revisions. So, don't try to merge branches with pure svn and git-svn on same branch. Git can produce colorful output with some commands; since some people hate colors way more than the rest likes them, by default the colors are turned off. However, if you remove everything, the rebase will be aborted.
Effectively Using Git With Subversion
The public repository is where everybody pulls and you. When getting my toes wet in Git, I started using an extremely useful git command called git-svn, which primarily can be used to checkout a Subversion repository to a local Git repo and then push your changes back to the original Subversion repository. In Git, you tell it, well, to create a branch. But resist the temptation to make any changes to it just yet. In Git you can make commits on top of the older revision and use it as another branch. Doing this is fairly simple, but there are some interesting tricks, and so I thought I would share a day in the Viget life with git-svn. External Git Consultants Git consultants can essentially handle the migration process for you for a nominal fee. To share the Git repository, the migration lead can share their local Git repository with other developers by pushing it to , a Git hosting service. Converting a Subversion repository to Git
But in Git, a commit represents the entire state of the whole project instead rather than file modifications. The rest of this document assumes that this is your current directory. If you want to send patches use git format-patch and possibly git send-email. With this the approach becomes easier. In Git, this is not possible: developers must retrieve the entire repository to work with it. Hopefully you have already created an authors file as well.
Converting a Subversion repository to Git

Many of the commands have very useful and interesting features that we won't list here and sometimes there are some extra notes you might want to know.
